Project Description
Akvo developed a prototype of a centralized data hub (AgraStat) that integrates diverse data sources into a single, accessible platform, supporting AGRA's business lines. Built on CKAN, an open-source data management system, AgraStat includes key custom features such as
- Data Storage,
- Cataloguing & Integration ;
- API Access for Integration;
- Custom Metadata search (Enables search by specific fields (e.g., crop types, data methods);
- Data Preview and Visualisation;
- and User management features.
The first phase focuses on prototyping, with future plans for advanced data governance, validation, and analytics capabilities.

AGRASTAT is a centralized data e-hub designed to consolidate and streamline agricultural data across Africa to support AGRA’s strategic goals.
Built on the open-source CKAN platform, AGRASTAT enables structured data cataloguing, integration with visualization tools like Power BI, and easy metadata management.
Key features include:
- Powerful search,
- API access for automation,
- smart tagging using AGROVOC.
- Custom extensions support data transformation,
- User role management,
- Usage analytics, and dataset commenting.
The platform accommodates public and private datasets, enabling secure, role-based access. Data is organized by countries (as organizations) and thematic groups aligned to AGRA’s business lines. Datasets and resources (e.g., CSVs, GeoJSON) are uploaded, previewed, and visualized directly within the portal. Integration with systems like Kobo and FAOSTAT supports automated data syncing.
AGRASTAT includes theming for AGRA branding, a user-friendly UI, and robust deployment via Docker.
