Narrative description of project:
Overview: Worldwide, 160 million children are forced to work, depriving them of education, protection and leisure. There are many causes for this phenomenon, the main one being poverty. In sub-Saharan Africa, child labour, including domestic work, is particularly widespread and has been increasing since 2012. Benin and Burkina Faso are not spared from this phenomenon. The project “Breaking the chains of exploitation of children in domestic labour in Burkina Faso and Benin” is being implemented to combat this phenomenon.
Challenge: Child domestic labour is a major problem that mainly affects girls from vulnerable families in Burkina Faso and Benin. Many of them are sent to the cities with the promise of stable employment, only to find themselves exploited, underpaid, deprived of education and exposed to abuse. Despite the legislative frameworks in place, enforcement remains limited, requiring a multi-sectoral approach to combat this exploitation.
Solution: To combat the phenomenon, “Breaking the chains of exploitation of children in domestic labour in Burkina Faso and Benin” is a project that aims to restore 5,000 child victims and raise awareness for 1 million people from 2023 to 2027. The project is funded by AFAS Foundation and led by a consortium of then organizations: Woord En Daad, SPONG, CREDO, ADDAD, Children Believe, CEATS, LYDIE, DEDRAS, CIPCRE and Akvo.
Impact: The project will have a significant impact at several levels: individual, community, institutional and national. It will contribute to social and institutional transformation by effectively combating the exploitation of children in domestic labour. Its impact will be felt by the beneficiary children, their families, communities and all those involved in child protection.
