In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Burkina Faso, NGO PE&D implemented a unique behavioral change project in 25 primary schools across the Est region. Moving beyond standard awareness campaigns, the project's core innovation was the application of ""nudge"" theory—a gentle behavioral approach that designs choices to encourage positive actions subconsciously.
The intervention involved constructing and adapting handwashing facilities to be playful and child-friendly, making the act of handwashing more appealing. This was complemented by training school focal points, providing soap and maintenance kits, and distributing awareness materials. A crucial component was a formal impact analysis to measure the effectiveness of the nudge intervention on students' handwashing practices. By making hygiene a seamless and engaging part of the school day, the project sought to create a sustainable change in behavior, reducing the spread of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases.
